COLT Update May 2025

In March, Rich Klingel was promoted to Senior COLT Instructor as he is now taking on a more active leadership role in the development of Taylor Harris and Brad Vargo, COLT鈥檚 latest instructor to be hired. Taylor has been spending a lot of time in the classroom leading the apprenticeship classes and recently completed a SET Solutions OSHA 30 course and NRECA鈥檚 Loss Control Seminar III while working toward the CLCP credential. Brad has been spending time listening and taking notes in the apprentice and JRP classes and is now running various stations at COLT as he gains confidence teaching different topics. At this point, we have conducted eight assessments with a total of 13 people in 2025. There are 153 apprentices in the program with 7 new hires beginning COLT 1000/1050 April 28th. The list for the fall new hire group already has 4 slots held. 聽We currently have 10 journeymen students in the middle of their five 鈥7000 series鈥 refresher courses. The COLD (COLT Onsite Lineworker Development) program has conducted 15 on-site visits through the first quarter of 2025. We thank everyone for their support and look forward to serving our cooperatives for the rest of the year.聽

System Overview

  • I really enjoyed doing the voltage and amp station that we went over. Really brought everything together for me and how things work. I thought the instructors did a really good job explaining it all.
  • Great class and great job on the instructors鈥 part. I believe having the smaller class made it easier to take our time with things rather than a bigger class and have to rush stations.
  • I think the instructors did a good job explaining everything in a way I can transfer everything in my job day to day.
  • Instructors did an awesome job and were very thorough.
  • Going over the current flowing through the transformers and seeing how it travels was an eye opener for me.
  • I will be taking away the meter socket checks when going to set a meter in the field.
  • I will take away the steps to meter checking and stepping up when I need to. I will take away learning RUS specs as well.

Powerline Safety II
  • I enjoyed the hands-on converting an A1 to an A6 and also enjoyed the hands-on grounding situations in the field.
  • I鈥檒l take the concepts of grounding and the different types of grounding back to my co-op which is helpful to know and now understand when I see it in the field.
  • I am leaving with a much more comfortable feeling about grounding and how to decide which kind of 鈥減lus one鈥 method to use in any situation.
  • The biggest takeaway is the lessons with mentoring that comes from the program; that I am in control of my safety behaviors and I can help change my co-op鈥檚 safety culture.
  • I have a much greater respect for backfeed after seeing it actually happen and work.
  • It was neat to see grounding in action in the live generator backfeed station. It kind of helped me connect the dots on why we ground.
  • The stations for this course were the best ones yet. Every one was explained well and I feel I learned a great deal with every station from this course.

Underground Powerline Construction

  • The course gave me a better understanding of the process for grounding underground cable.
  • I learned more about how loop feeds work.
  • I learned how to ground properly on radial feeds and how to change out a transformer with a radial feed.
  • The energized situations with grounding in the indoor facility with radial and loop feed systems were needed and very effective.
  • A good class. Happy to be here.
  • Was a helpful class, haven鈥檛 gotten much experience in working underground outages, mostly new construction. So a few things came to me slower, but I learned a lot this week.
  • I enjoyed the course, a lot of valuable information I鈥檒l take back with me. Enjoyed learning how to locate underground cable properly.
  • Great week. I now have a much better understanding of underground grounding.
