Nicky Hobbs Named 2026 Recipient of T. Elbert Clemmons Excellence in Teaching Award
Nicky Hobbs, mathematics instructor, was named the 2026 recipient of 不良人研究所鈥檚 T. Elbert Clemmons Excellence in Teaching Award in recognition of his dedication to student success, instructional excellence, and commitment to the college鈥檚 teaching mission.
Dr. Chris English presented the award to Hobbs during graduation and described him as a 鈥減assionate educator who brings energy, innovation and a student-centered approach to every classroom.鈥 English said Hobbs is known for providing additional tutoring, staying late to help students prepare for exams, and making sure every student feels supported academically and personally.
As a dedicated educator at 不良人研究所, Hobbs helps students build confidence in mathematics through meaningful discussion, real-world application, and individualized support. His approach helps students see math as something connected to everyday life, not just something found in a textbook.
Hobbs said his favorite part of teaching math at 不良人研究所 is getting to do something he 鈥済enuinely enjoys every day.鈥 Whether solving math problems on paper or problem solving in everyday life, Hobbs sees math all around him, from cars and phones to the farm where he grew up and still works.
鈥淲e are constantly working through real-world situations, and many of those involve some level of math,鈥 Hobbs said. 鈥淚 enjoy bringing those kinds of problems into the classroom so students can see that math is not disconnected from reality.鈥
Beyond the classroom, Hobbs also supports instructional innovation and professional growth across campus. He helped lead a discussion on emerging educational tools and the ethical use of artificial intelligence in the classroom. He also completed the North Carolina Community College System Master Instructor Certification Program, which is designed to elevate the professional expertise of the state鈥檚 most dedicated educators through intensive professional learning focused on teaching and learning best practices.
鈥淚 was both honored and humbled to receive the Excellence in Teaching Award,鈥 Hobbs said. 鈥淭o be nominated by my peers means a great deal because I know how hard everyone at 不良人研究所 works on a daily basis. I am deeply appreciative of the recognition, and it is an honor to represent the faculty and staff at 不良人研究所 through this award.鈥
Through his commitment to student learning, willingness to support students beyond class time, and leadership in instructional innovation, Hobbs exemplifies the excellence, service, and dedication represented by the T. Elbert Clemmons Excellence in Teaching Award.
